Noelle Finds APA’s Big Brothers & Sisters Program: A Rewarding and Fun Volunteer Opportunity

Noelle is a mature and tenacious ten year old who’s passion for learning about dogs is unmatched. Although she cannot have her own dog due to family allergies, that doesn’t stop her from seeking out what she loves.

Unfortunately there aren’t a ton of ways a girl in elementary school can volunteer with dogs on the level Noelle wants. So when she asked her parents to contact us two years ago after seeing one of our marked cars in a parking lot, we had to find a way to incorporate her into our team. Since then she has helped us do everything from bake dog biscuits to manage our booth at various events. She even participated in the Pit Crew’s training class, helping the dogs practice for their challenging roles as therapy dogs. Still, this isn’t quite enough for her, as all Noelle wants to do is spend time with dogs.

Thankfully, allowing fantastic kids like Noelle volunteer and learn about animals just got easier in Austin. With the help and support of her parents, Noelle is able to be part of Austin Pets Alive’s new Big Brother/Sister Program. A lucky (and quite adorable) dog named Bunny got Noelle as her “Big” recently. Noelle is familiarized with Bunny’s schedule and needs, wrote Bunny’s bio to help her get adopted, and gets to do fun stuff with her like play and teach her obedience cues.

While most ten year old girls are playing video games and making lists of all the toys, clothes and shoes they want, Noelle is focused on something entirely different. She reads countless books on anything dog-related and volunteers as much time as she can to opportunities that will allow her to help dogs and the people who love them.

Noelle’s love for animals, sense of humor, perseverance, and utterly amazing tendency for giving to others before she takes for herself, have made her a true inspiration in our lives. We are proud to say she is part of our team and thankful for programs like APA’s Big Brothers/Sisters for giving her the opportunity to learn and grow as a truly good and wonderful person. We hope to be more like Noelle when we grow up.

Halloween – Dogs in Costumes

Lyla and Mo tried on their Halloween costumes this morning and they handled it like champs as usual. Of course, I promptly rewarded them afterward with “Bye-Bye Time” in the car and walks as a gracious thank you for tolerating my stupid human antics.
As it turns out, Lyla makes a beautiful cow. And true to her nature, she happily accepted all the treats I gave her in return for holding still and keeping that silly cow hoodie on her head. She even smiled. Actually, I think she kind of liked it.
Mo, our Land Shark (or should we say Couch Shark), also didn’t seem to mind wearing his costume at all. I think he’s just thankful that I’m not trying to balance sunglasses on his nose this time.

Handsome Dog Seeking Lucky Human for Great Companionship

Do you love long walks on the lake, cuddling by the fire, a good sense of humor, eating tasty food, and belly rubs? Well, ok – giving belly rubs. If you said yes, then this guy might your perfect match!

Playful yet gentle and not afraid of anyone.

Our handsome friend here was found wandering a neighborhood street in Houston and looking pretty hungry. No tags, no microchip, and no home in sight, he has yet to be claimed and needs a good home as soon as possible.

He is fairly young (probably just under a year or so) and surprisingly small at about 40-45lbs. Our guess is Shepherd mixed with a much smaller breed. He is currently

in The Woodlands (North Houston), but could easily be brought to Austin for the right family.

So far he has been busy stealing the hearts of everyone who meets him. He is very outgoing with a really fun personality, politely playing and romping around with anyone willing (dog or human) with a nice sense of respect for boundaries.

If you’re looking for a fun young canine friend to have some adventures with – This guy is right up your alley!

The Woodlands Dog Park Association (TWDPA) has kindly provided a FREE neuter and he will be completely vetted with shots and a check up. Donations for his adoption/neuter can be made to TWDPA.

His new family must be willing to give him a warm, happy, and safe home where he sleeps indoors, is never left outside for long hot days, and is kept current on vet care. He also will need lots of play and exercise – he loves companionship.

Free obedience classes have been arranged in The Woodlands for him or…

If he is adopted in Austin, Leaps n’ Hounds will give his new family 2 free in-home training sessions to get him started in the right direction.

Please spread the word to friends, co-workers and family so we can get this guy out of limbo and into the good home he deserves.

Just look at that sweet face. It's hard to believe that dogs this charming are left to wander the streets homeless, but that is exactly where this guy was found.
