More Common Questions About Training

What is your training approach/technique?

Do No Harm.

We believe in a relationship based training approach that incorporates communication, positive reinforcement, exercise, mutual respect, clear boundaries, and a focus on addressing the root causes of  behavior.  We have chosen this humane, fast, effective, and safe approach because it builds confident, happy, and well-behaved dogs with very strong bonds to their human families.

Our practical and common sense approach dispels the myths about dominance-based training and teaches useful obedience techniques.   You will find us to be kind, educated, very dedicated, and good at what we do.

What’s the difference between classes and private in-home training?

Puppy classes (or group training classes) occur once a week on a fixed schedule and stick to a set curriculum.  Typically 1-2 basic commands (or cues) are taught per session then built upon over the next few weeks.  If you miss a class, there are make up opportunities but time is limited.  Obedience classes can be more cost efficient and a fun social environment for young dogs.  However, some dogs do not do well in this environment and can become overwhelmed impacting training negatively.  Dogs who react this way should be pulled from class and worked with in a quieter setting.  Classes range from 6 to 8 weeks and occur at the same time every week for an hour.

Private training is tailored to suit the home & dog.   It is a more cost effective option for people who need to work with more than one dog, or in cases where the issues are between multiple dogs and/or people.   Obedience cues are more interlined with psychology & behavior of the dog and the client has more say in what they want to teach their dog.    Unlike typical obedience classes we may also teach cues like “in” “out” “load up” “with me” and various others tailored to social settings, the home, the car,  or to make an exercise routine or game easier.  Scheduling is completely flexible to fit the client’s needs and more can be taught in a shorter period since the trainer’s attention is not shared.
